Brainstorming Session:
Top-Level pitch – not financial analysis
Citizen blogger type – example nowpublic.com
Aggregation
Hyperlocal
Community or niche
Perk of your site: Incorporate geotagging into your news – a different app for all types of phones
Anywhere you see news, you text in and it shows you on a map of where the news is happening
Register you when you sign up, and it puts you in a community/neighborhood. And it appears to anyone else who’s in the group
Need a core group of early adopters – they start generating the contents
Paid to comment to move the conversation along – paid as conversation starters
Headlines based on tags
Users texting in photos, posted directly to the site.
“An explosion of great things”
Who’s the audience?
- AU students
- Super-texters
- Funding? From university
- It’s all about how you package your site/idea.
Scenario 1: AU site, independent, news, hyperlocal, texting-driven, student-run; Tenleytown neighborhood; talk to journalism professors to get involved; not sponsored by university; discuss on-campus news; section about immediate neighborhood activities; a lot of concerts; more fun approach than the Eagle does; curse words are OK; edgier; disregard for AP; model: the silver spring penguin.
This could tie into scenario 1: Restaurants, bars, nightlife – how long is the wait? Happy hour/specials; live cameras on; main page is real news; DC based, city life site, focus on college – just AU; if it works, move it to other DC schools; as it grows you can develop it in other cities/schools; journalists who are working for you monitor/edit content; pros: don’t need to pay a lot for staff; could see concerts online
Scenario 3: high school sports web site; public or private schools?; MoCo high schools sports because parents would pay; all games archived online, some would be live; recruiters are looking for sophomore/juniors for recruiting; get scores for all games; high school journalists will twitter/rss for us with updates; local businesses would pay for ads; elite teams would all pay (examples: Mont soccer league, Rockville mont swim club, carl burke); what’s the point? Helps college recruiting; spotlights some kids who aren’t getting a lot of attn; rivalry factor is what would drive traffic; get experts on how to be a better baseball players; make sure the schools sign a release to record games; football, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, field hockey; track; swim, golf; cover sports that are ranked the highest; pay to be a user; premium content gets all the video; everyone can see scores; percentage of profit would go to scholarship for college; could have team pages
Scenario 4: virtual cemetery; geneology driven; celebration of life; take a picture of your tombstone and plot it on a map; search an image of the cemetery and go one by one to see each; post obits with it; talk about family history; tie into washpost obits
Scenario 5: Get a device where the animal can tweet – tells you when they need to pee; pettweets.com
Scenario 6: audience: couples who are getting married outside of the us; web site provide information on destination weddings; if people become a member, they can upload their photos/videos of the experience; find new places to get married; like a travel channel show; have a feature photo or video with a couple’s experience; could expand to destination travel; can generate revenue by having ppl book their packages through the web site (like expedia); make deals with advertisers; could tweet on the location of the destination; have discussion board threads; off-the beaten path ideas; starting by having people submit their stories, videos, photos; start as a blog, encourage ppl to upload their stories; rate their locations
Scenario 7: baddates.com – you tweet when you need to leave your bad date and someone “Saves” you
Scenario 8: secretly video tape your bad date; top bad date videos; encourage ppl to record other ppl on bad dates
Scenario 9: match up ppl who tweet to each other in a bar; and then interview each of them and write it up as a story
